It never came to Australia but if your interested in what happened to your 99 heres the story.
Sometime after 1980 the 99 lost the Combi-Coupé body style, and the EMS and Turbo models. The 99 was available as a 2 or 4 door, 4 or 5 speed, 1 or 2 carburettor with the SAAB 2.0L 8 value H Block.
In 1985 the 9000 was cruising the roads of Europe, and the 900 was doing well. The 99 was still deemed to be ok but was dated by the tail. The rear end of the 99 was a product of the late 60s, so SAAB went digging through the parts bin for a new rear end. After a bit of hunting they found the rear-end of the 900 (Must of been a big parts bin with a whole end of a 900 sitting in there). They placed this on the end of a 99 and with a bit of heaving and hoeing they had a 90.
Other than a new tail (and a few other minor things that needed updating) the 90 was a 99.
Why 90 you ask, simple it was to be the base model SAAB, the 900 was the middle and the 9000 the top end so they decided upon 90 (well I think this is a good idea, things that are more expensive do have more 0s). The SAAB line-up was 90, 900, and 9000.
